By far the best site that I've come across is www.chess.com. The site has everything; correspondence chess, live chess, it allows you to join groups, participate in team games, vote chess, watch chess videos, tactics training, daily puzzles, chess mentor... I could go on forever. I've been playing there for over a year and a half. It really is good. If anyone joins chess.com, be sure to let me know so we can have a game.

www.chesscafe.com is a great place - they've got thousands of articles in the archives, authors like Davies, Seirawan, Miles, Dvoretsky, Polgar, Alburt etc. www.chess.com is the best site there is for correspondence chess (and they've got a lot of interesting articles, too!), although for blitz games I find www.chesscube.com even more friendly in terms of interface and, most importantly, the quality of the connection. A daily puzzle on www.chessgames.com is a good way to stay in shape, plus there are more than 500000 games in the database. I used to love stuff like chess.emrald.net/ and chesstempo.com/ but now I am not even sure if these sites don't foster bad habits, as my online rating went 200 points down after I spent too much time on Chess Tactics Server and is now steadily improving after I gave it up ... see www.chessplayer.com/donots.htm for reference
