Previously people have thanked me for my introductory comments on chess and asked me to write more. Ade recently suggested I post something, and that combined with not wanting "Not the Nicest People" to be the top thread I will again remind folks that I have boards for chess variants, notably circular and hex chess, and would love to play them if folks are interested. Recently a young Polishman called Bartek came to the park. after beating me with the regular variety did so at Circular chess as well. the game is described here:
www.chessvariants.org/shape.dir/circular.html
While a website for a Circular Chess spciety is still up, it hasnt been amended in over 6 years, so presumably it is defunct. The game appears to have been played regularly in Lincoln fpr 13 years, and while some brief endgame theory is given, interestingly there is no reference to any established openings. Some games with Yidnek suggested that this is because both the lack of a centre and back ranks makes the opening less sharp and hence gives greater leeway. Well after a few games with Bartek, never having seen the game before, he proceeded to create opening theory. I had thought any pawn could be safely advanced, and he domonstrated that (in regular notation) both b4 and g4 are dubious since a5 or h5 respectively threaten to allow Black to open up the doubled rooks, and pushing the pawn on doesnt really help. After inflicting further refutations, he proceeded to invent a gambit to open the rooks and create devastating mate threat with the Queen which succeded despite losing a rook with check. I hope he comes back and plays me again, but please give it a try folks, I need the help!
